Alopecia Areata Treatment in Gurgaon

One out of ten people suffers from an autoimmune disorder globally. In such disorders, our body's immune system perceives our healthy cells as a foreign element and attacks them. Different types of autoimmune disorders target different types of cells.

Alopecia areata is also an autoimmune disorder in which the hair follicles are attacked, leading to abnormal hair loss. Here is everything you need to know about this condition and where to get an alopecia areata treatment in Gurgaon by Dr. Niti Gaur.

What is Alopecia Areata?

This autoimmune disorder attacks the hair follicles, causing strands of hair to fall in clumps from random spots on the scalp or body. This can develop over the years, suddenly, or keep recurring every few years. The hair may or may not regrow, and, in some cases, it falls away again after regrowing. Apart from the physical effects, this disorder can also lead to low confidence and lower self-esteem.

There are four major types of alopecia areata

1. Alopecia Areata Universalis

The hair falls from all over the body, including the scalp, eyelids, eyebrows, and body hair.

2. Alopecia Areata Totalis

The hair falls only from the scalp, forming patches, which may or may not regrow.

3. Diffuse Alopecia Areata

It causes an abrupt thinning of the hair.

4. Ophiasis Alopecia Areata

The hair on the sides and back of the head fall, forming a band-like shape.

Causes of Alopecia Areata

Although alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder, it is still unknown as to what triggers it in a person. Researchers believe that this disorder may have a hereditary origin. The genes of alopecia areata could be present in an individual, and in some of them, some environmental or other factors trigger the gene. However, this speculation is yet to be confirmed. Studies have found that people suffering from certain conditions are at a higher risk of having alopecia areata. Some of those conditions are:

  • Vitiligo
  • Thyroid
  • Asthma
  • Down syndrome
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Pernicious anemia

Symptoms of Alopecia Areata

If you're having abnormal hair loss and suspect that you may have alopecia areata, look out for the following symptoms:

  • Small bald patches on different parts of the body, mostly the scalp.
  • Loss of a large amount of hair in a short period.
  • Enlargement of small patches into a bald spot.
  • An itching or tingling sensation in the scalp before the hair falls out.

Some symptoms are also observed in the nails:

  • Nails becoming rough
  • Pinpoint dips in the nails
  • White dots or lines on the nails

Treatment of Alopecia Areata

If you suspect you have alopecia areata, it's best to visit a dermatologist. The doctor would inquire about your symptoms and inspect the bald patches. They may check the strength and texture of individual hairs and pull slightly to see if they come off under light pressure too. Since nails also carry symptoms of this condition, they may inspect your nails too.

There is no proven cure for this disorder. But some treatments can help in the hair regrowth and prevent it from falling again.

1. Minoxidil

It is an over-the-counter medicine suitable for people who have mild to moderate alopecia areata. It needs to be applied regularly and can take years to show effects.

2. Topical Immunotherapy

This method uses the chemical diphencyprone to induce an allergic rash on the scalp or skin. The rash might resemble poison oak, and it can stimulate the growth of hair within 5-6 months. It is advisable to be consistent with the treatment to get effective results.

3. Anthralin

This drug is also a dritho-scalp drug that irritates the skin to spur hair regrowth in the body.

4. Steroid injections

This treatment is for those who experience very mild and patchy alopecia. Steroids are injected through tiny needles into the bare skin in some affected areas to promote hair regrowth. However, this treatment needs to be repeated after every 1-2 months.

5. Creams

Corticosteroids in the form of ointments, foams, and lotions also work wonders since it tends to decrease inflammation in your hair follicle.
